Science Sequence
We hold that our students need, not just factual scientific literacy (the usual definition), but experience that leads to understanding the methods, power and limitation of scientific knowledge. The Honors College Science Sequence is directed toward students in the Honors College who are not declared majors in the physical or biological sciences.
2461H (161GH) - The Warm Little Pond
The course will begin with the free-form observation of a small, stable pond on the MU campus. Observation begets questions, and the first exercise in the course will be to pose questions. What's there? How much of each is there? How do the various components interrelate? How does the system maintain stability? What happens if conditions change?
2462H (162GH) - The Warm Little Planet
Beginning with a consideration of the physical universe at an astronomical scale, students will construct models for the interaction between the physical and biological worlds, and assess the possibility for life on other planets. The course will begin with consideration of the size, extent, and history of the observable universe since the Big Bang. How large is the Universe? What is in it? How old is it? How common are the physical conditions necessary to support life? How do living and nonliving systems interact on Earth? How did they interact in the past? How do they interact today?
