Admission Requirements
The Honors College invites applications from students after they have been accepted to the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The honors program is characterized by small classes, a more personalized system of advising and many special events throughout the year that give honors students the opportunity to interact with faculty members and other honors students.
Incoming Freshmen
Eligibility
You are eligible to apply if you have a 29 or above on the ACT or 1280 on the SAT and are in the top 10 percent of your graduating high school class*. You need only to complete an application to be considered by the Honors College.
*If your school does not use class rank and your "core GPA" is at least 3.71, you can use your core GPA for automatic admission to the Honors College in place of class rank criterion. "Core GPA" = all English courses, all math courses Algebra I and higher, all science courses, all social studies courses, and all foreign language courses. You must have at least a 29 ACT or a 1280 SAT score for automatic admission.
Petitioning
If you are an incoming freshman who does not meet both of the admissions criteria, you are required to submit an essay as part of your application. Students' essays will be evaluated on an individual basis.
The essay should be no more than two typed, double-spaced pages. Remember to include your name, and MU student ID number at the top of the page.
In the essay, tell us a bit about yourself, your interests and your favorite courses in high school. Explain why you believe the Honors College criteria (ACT and class rank) are not accurate measures of what you are able to accomplish. Please illustrate your statement with examples of your high school achievements, including classes, activities and part-time work, where relevant. Feel free to include other information you think would be helpful to us.
Current MU Students
You may apply if, after at least two semesters (30 credit hours), your cumulative GPA is 3.5 or above. You do not need to include ACT scores, high school information or previous college credit on the application. Please include the number of MU college credit hours you have completed.
Transfer Students
If you are interested in applying to the Honors College, you may do so if, after at least two semesters (30 credit hours) of college work, your cumulative GPA is a 3.5 or higher. You do not need to include ACT scores of high school information on the application. Please include the name of your previous college or university and the number of credit hours you have completed.
Deadline
The application for incoming students is due the third Friday in May.
