The Brazeal Honors College Endowed Diversity Scholarship
The Honors College is pleased to invite your inquiries into the Brazeal Honors College Diversity Scholarship. This Scholarship, made possible through the generosity of James H. and Catherine A Brazeal, is designed to be a four-year award for high-ability minority students, with any major, from anywhere in the United Sates. Preference is given to African-American students.
For Fall 2010, recipients of the Brazeal Scholarship will receive:
-At least $12,500 a year, renewable for a total of four years
-Waiver of out-of-state tuition
-An additional $6,000 to cover the costs associated with an MU Study Abroad Program
-$1,700 stipend for freshman year participation in the MU Discovery Fellows Research program
Recipients of the Brazeal Scholarship are eligible to receive National Merit, Bright Flight, and Inroads Scholarships. They may not be eligible for certain general University Scholarships such as Nonresident Scholars Award, Curators Scholars Award, Excellence Award, George Brooks Scholarship, Diversity Award, etc.
Eligible Brazeal applicants are selected from the pool of applicants for MU's George C. Brooks Scholarships. The Brooks scholarship is designed for high-ability students from ethnic/racial groups that are underrepresented in Missouri higher education. Interviews for the Brooks scholarship are conducted during the first two Saturdays in March each year. Brooks scholarship candidates who meet the more rigorous Brazeal selection criteria will interview for BOTH scholarships.
Brazeal candidates are interviewed by one or more of the directors of the Honors College. Each interview is 30 minutes in length. Interviewers have access to the applicant's standardized test scores, class rank, and an essay submitted for the Brooks Scholarship.
Students who meet the eligibility requirements and favorably impress the interviewers are asked to submit additional information in support of the Brazeal Scholarship application. Students are given 2 weeks to submit a) a letter describing their academic, extracurricular, and volunteer activities in high school and b) a letter from a teacher or an administrator who can address their academic skills and personal qualities.
Applications for the 2012 Brooks Scholarships are due on January 13, 2012. For more information, please go to http://financialaid.missouri.edu/types-of-aid/scholarships/scholarships/brooks-scholarship/index.php.
