Biography

Dr. Nick Mathews is an active member of the University of Missouri’s Honors College community, having taught multiple Honors courses and mentored numerous Honors undergraduate research projects. In addition to teaching J1100: Principles of Journalism in Democracy, a 200-plus-student course required of all first-year students in the School of Journalism, Mathews teaches an Honors discussion section of J1100. In this setting, he empowers students to take ownership of the classroom by selecting material to share, leading discussions and serving as facilitators for their peers. Mathews also has mentored Discovery Fellows, Stamps Scholars and Cherng Summer Scholars as they have conducted independent research and presented their work at academic conferences across the country. Through both his teaching and mentorship, he emphasizes intellectual curiosity, student leadership and the development of independent scholars.
