The University of Missouri Honors College is offering interested Honors students an opportunity to build their leadership skills and connect with Honors in a meaningful way. The college is actively recruiting students to join a new organization – the Honors College Student Council.
“Honors students are ambitious, creative and exceptionally talented,” said Audrey Francis, a senior academic advisor in the Honors College. “It is extremely important for Honors students to get involved outside of the classroom while they’re here at Mizzou so that they can learn leadership and teamwork skills, and to make this large university feel like home. Getting involved is a great way to explore interests outside of your major and try something new. The Honors College Student Council will be a way for our founding members to have a lasting impact on the Honors College community.”
The student council will feature a handful of leadership positions and will have three separate committees – professional development, social and service. Each committee will have several responsibilities and give students an opportunity to interact with fellow Honors students as well as Honors staff and leadership. For example, the social committee will be charged with developing and hosting exciting events; the service committee will search for volunteer and fundraising opportunities; and the professional development committee will offer career development chances for Honors students. That’s just a small example of what the committees will do, too.
“I am so excited for Honors students to have a chance to build the Honors College Student Council,” Francis said. “My hope is that the student council will provide an opportunity to build their leadership skills, contribute to a thriving Honors community and to represent the student voice in the Honors College.”
Applications are currently open for interested students. Students must be pursuing the Honors Certificate at Mizzou and graduate in December 2025 or later to apply. Student council members must:
- Regularly attend biweekly meetings throughout the academic year
- Attend planning and team-bonding events during academic breaks, when available
- Actively participate in the student council by planning and coordinating events, fulfilling duties as assigned and advocating for Honors students as needed
- Maintain communication with the council via email and other platforms (such as GroupMe or Canvas)
Applications are due at the end of the day on Friday, Feb. 14. Decisions will be released by the end of February. Contact Willow Amann (willow.amann@missouri.edu) with any questions.
