When Fawwaz Chohan was making his college decision, he wanted a university that would allow him to pursue his unique combination of interests.
Throughout high school, Chohan was passionate about global studies, particularly the people, cultures and histories that shape different parts of the world. He also had an interest in medicine, as he’d seen the impact medical professionals in his life had made by helping their patients.
Mizzou offered him an opportunity to explore both paths.
“Some of the universities I visited said I would probably have to choose one, and while there were some that said the combination was a possibility, Mizzou made me feel like there was no doubt that I could pursue both,” said Chohan, who is from St. Louis, Missouri. “At Mizzou, I knew I was going to be able to get the type of education that I desired.”
While Mizzou was already his top choice, the Stamps Scholarship made the decision even easier.
Mizzou Stamps Scholars have a variety of unique opportunities, including a dedicated mentor, opportunities to connect with campus leadership, alumni networking, funding for study abroad and connections with other students in a larger Stamps Scholarship network. Scholars also participate in research early on in their college journey and are enrolled in the Honors College for all four years, working toward the completion of the Honors Certificate.
Semifinalists for the scholarship are invited to campus for a weekend to interview for the award, meet current Stamps Scholars, participate in an in-depth campus tour and interact with Mizzou leadership.
“I remember sitting in an Honors College class during the weekend and the topic was on like medieval church architecture, something I would never have thought I would find interesting,” Chohan said. “But the way that it was being taught was captivating. Every student was so engaged, and I knew it was an environment I wanted to be part of.”
Chohan is one of eight Stamps Scholars beginning at Mizzou this fall. He will be an international studies major, with a specific focus on peace studies, and will be on the pre-medicine track.
“Growing up, I always loved geography and history, but it went beyond knowing country flags or what was in the textbook,” Chohan said. “I loved learning about people and cultures. I was part of Model United Nations and volunteered with local organizations that support refugees.
“I really think there’s a strong connection between cultural understanding and clinical medicine. I’m really excited to mesh the two at Mizzou.”
The scholarship will allow Chohan to participate in research. He’s currently looking at projects tied to medicine or a similar field.
Beyond the Stamps Scholarship, Chohan said he is excited to explore the many offerings across campus. He is interested in the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy and is hoping to participate in at least one study abroad program. He’s also ready to cheer on the Tiger athletic teams.
“I have loved soccer my entire life,” Chohan said. “I was actually watching a soccer match when I got the call that I was going to be a Stamps Scholar. I honestly think the sport is tied perfectly to international studies, as soccer is a great way to relate to people across the globe. I plan to attend as many Mizzou soccer matches as I can, and I’m also hoping to try out for the club team.
“It’s great to be part of the SEC and get to watch our athletes compete at the highest level.”
