The Honors College Communication Internship team plays an important role in sharing the Honors story. They showcase their storytelling skills in a variety of ways and through numerous communication channels.
This year, five students are part of the internship program, including three who are new to the team. Meet one of the new students, Ben Hartong! Hartong is a sophomore journalism major.
How did you find your way to the University of Missouri?
I, like many out-of-state students, came to Mizzou for the J-School. Mizzou had always been on my radar, but visiting campus is what solidified it as my top school. The community I felt in Columbia was second to none, and it was apparent from day one that this would be the best place for me to learn.
What interested you in the School of Journalism at Mizzou?
Since the age of 10, I have wanted to become a professional sports broadcaster. The Missouri Method spoke to me because I wanted to go somewhere I could get hands-on broadcast experience as early as my freshman year. The J-School spoke to me because not only would it allow me to do that, but I could also gain experience in multiple journalistic mediums.
Could you talk about being part of the Honors College and some of the opportunities you’ve had through the college?
The Honors College has been a great way for me to make the most out of the limited time I have at Mizzou. I focus most of my curriculum on sports journalism, but I also have a myriad of interests including history, politics and music. The Honors College has allowed me to integrate those interests into my college experience without taking away from my career goals. Being in an Honors FIG my freshman year was incredibly helpful, especially as someone who knew nobody when arriving to campus.
Do you have a favorite Honors class you’ve taken?
Viruses: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly with Dr. Amanda Paz Herrera! I am not into science, but I loved taking this course alongside students from all different majors. We learned not only about the molecular structure of some of the world’s deadliest viruses, but also the historical and cultural implications of them.
What’s a fun fact about you that others may not know?
I have collected vinyl since I was 7 years old. My collection is nearing 300 records, the most important of which are The Beatles’ 13 studio albums.
