The Honors College Communication Internship team plays an important role in sharing the Honors story. They showcase their storytelling skills in a variety of ways and through numerous communication channels.
This year, five students are part of the internship program, including three who are new to the team. Meet one of the new students, Joseph Winterbower! Winterbower is a junior digital storytelling major who is minoring in film studies and music.
How did you find your way to the University of Missouri?
I found my way to the university because both my parents went to Mizzou along with my brother, too. It always felt like my whole life, I was meant to go to Mizzou, and I never wanted to go anywhere else. I was originally going to pursue a degree in hospitality management because I wanted to open a restaurant but I found out about digital storytelling and I chose that instead!
What interested you in digital storytelling at Mizzou?
I wanted to go into media production in some way, but I didn’t want to be tied to only film. I love film and ultimately would love to be the man behind the camera, but I wanted to keep my scope broad and narrow it as I learned more. Pursuing digital storytelling allows me to learn different ways to tell stories on a screen with or without being behind a camera, and that’s what it was all about for me! I have really loved all my courses thus far and am excited to continue getting into my higher-level courses for even more in-depth work!
Could you talk about being part of the Honors College and some of the opportunities you’ve had through the college?
I’ve really enjoyed my time in the Honors College! My very first semester, I got to take an Honors film studies course that really made me fall in love more with my studies. Beyond that, I’ve gotten to take multiple courses that I otherwise would not have that have been through the Honors College! I’ve learned so much more than what’s in my degree program and I can’t wait to learn more!
Do you have a favorite Honors class you’ve taken?
My favorite Honors course has definitely been my Introduction to Film Studies course with Dr. Ramsay Wise. I love watching movies and his love for film mixed with an Honors setting just made the class something special.
What’s a fun fact about you that others may not know?
A fun fact about me is that I have seen the movie, Interstellar, 21 times!
