Marc Canellas has Built a Career Advocating for Others

Story by Logan Jackson Like his peers, Marc Canellas spent his final year at the University of Missouri balancing academics, applications and social activities, as well as preparing for the next phase of his personal journey. He somehow also found the time to co-create an entire professional conference centered on politics and science. Canellas spent the summer between his junior and senior year interning in Washington, D.C., with SAE International as part of the WISE (Washington Internships for Students of Engineering) program. His work during that internship fueled an already strong passion that Canellas had for science…

MU Excels Celebrates Fellowship Mentors, Applicants

University of Missouri students pursue a variety of nationally competitive grants, scholarships and fellowships throughout the academic year – but they don’t do so alone. In addition to their faculty mentors, the Mizzou Office of Global and National Fellowships aids students during the application journey as they navigate the various requirements, all the while exploring their interests, building their skills, articulating their goals and developing lasting mentor relationships.

Spreading a Positive Message

Story and photos by Logan Jackson Since joining the University of Missouri as an assistant teaching professor nearly two years ago, Carrie Ellis-Kalton has encouraged students in each of her classes to make a positive impact in the Columbia community. That encouragement led to a unique partnership with Honors College students in her “Survey of Psychopathology” (PSYCH 2510H) course and the Mizzou Made Mental Health team. For the past three semesters, Honors students have provided vital mental health resources and worked to raise mental health awareness during many of Mizzou Athletics’…

A Spring and Summer of Adventure

Story by Sophia Anderson Senior Jasper Holland left the United States for the first time thanks to funding from the University of Missouri.  His first experience was last spring, for a research conference to Uzbekistan. This past summer, he went to France, where he worked on the reconstruction of a 17th century ship. Holland spent five days as part of the ship’s crew, sailing the English Channel. “I’m from here in Columbia, so I’m not near the ocean and never really have been,” Holland said. “It’s always been something that sounded like it would be really…

Experiential Learning at the Next Level

Story by Logan Jackson A constitutional democracy major at the University of Missouri, TJ Benoist spent the past year taking experiential learning to the next level. Benoist, a sophomore, ran for a county commissioner seat in St. Francois County, Missouri. While he didn’t win the election, the experience was a perfect one for a student pursuing a degree that is focused on providing a foundation for thoughtful citizenship, leadership and civic engagement. “I was thinking a lot about some of the lower-level races early last year – especially where I’m from in St. Francois County – and…

Senior Spotlight: Avery Rayle

Story by Logan Jackson As Avery Rayle was exploring plant sciences degree programs at colleges across the state, she said there was one thing that stood out about the University of Missouri – ample opportunities to conduct meaningful undergraduate research right away. Nearly four years later, Rayle is finishing her plant sciences degree with a stellar research portfolio. “I knew I wanted to study plant sciences, and as I was comparing programs at different universities, none of them had an emphasis on research like Mizzou,” Rayle said. “There are so many dedicated programs here for getting undergraduates…

The Perfect Place to Grow

Story by Logan Jackson Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, Jacob Hicks said the University of Missouri was always on his radar as a great option to continue his education. When Hicks made an official campus visit, Mizzou went from being an option to the primary option. “There were definitely some other schools that I looked at,” Hicks said. “Mizzou was the first place I visited that wowed me with all the research opportunities and fun classes. They also actually had the major I was interested in – plant sciences. Mizzou just felt welcoming overall.” Hicks has been caring…
