Applying to the Honors College

Students do not need to be admitted to Mizzou to apply to the Honors College. However, your official test scores and transcripts must be on file with Mizzou Admissions for the application to appear on your Application Status Page and for our committee to review your materials. The Honors College uses a holistic review process of application materials. There is no specific criteria or level of achievement that guarantees Honors acceptance.

Honors College Eligibility Requirements

Incoming freshmen can apply with test scores (ACT/SAT) or test optional.

The Honors College application will automatically appear on your Application Status Page once the University of Missouri Office of Admissions has reviewed your materials and you meet one of the following criteria:

  • ACT score of 31 or above
  • SAT score of 1390 or above
  • ACT score of 28-30 and a top 20% class rank (for ranking high schools) or a 3.75 core GPA (for non-ranking high schools)
  • SAT score of 1300-1380 and a top 20% class rank (for ranking high schools) or a 3.75 core GPA (for non-ranking high schools)

Students who do not meet the above criteria can request an application. We welcome your application!

How to Apply to the Honors College

Step 1: Apply to Mizzou

Apply for admission to the University of Missouri

Step 2: Apply to the Honors College

Once admitted to Mizzou, students who are eligible to apply for Honors College admission and scholarships will see the application on their Application Status Page. Complete your application by submitting:

  • Your resume
  • Essay of 500-750 words. Please use this essay to personalize your application so we can know more about you as an individual. The essay should address one of the following:
    • We assume Honors College students are bright, hard-working and determined. What’s a unique trait you have that we wouldn’t know just by reading your resume?
    • Everyone has core values. Tell us a time someone or something challenged one of yours. What happened? How did it change you?
    • You may also use your common application essay.

Step 3: Apply for Honors College scholarships (optional)

To be considered for all Honors College scholarships, submit the Stamps Scholarship Application via your application status page by December 1.

Deadlines

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; you will be notified of your admissions status (on your Mizzou Status Page and via email) within five to six weeks after you have applied. All admissions decisions are final. We are unable to give specific feedback regarding your application due to the volume of applications and our holistic review process.

Freshmen Interest Groups (FIGs)

Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) are comprised of 15 to 20 first-year students who live near each other and enroll in a few general education classes together. As a member of an Honors FIG, you would have guaranteed Honors housing, co-enrolled classes (including at least one Honors course) with your fellow Honors FIG students, and a one-hour/week proseminar class co-taught by an Honors student and Honors faculty member. Honors FIGs are a great way to meet fellow Honors students, get involved with the college and earn Honors credit (for those courses that contain an “H”)!

You will automatically be enrolled to the corresponding FIG class bundle prior to Summer Welcome. You may work with your academic advisor to complete the remainder of your class schedule and make adjustments for prior class credit. Classes in FIG bundles are subject to change.
