As Helton Walker toured the University of Missouri campus during the Stamps Scholarship interview weekend, each stop showcased a new and exciting opportunity that Walker couldn’t wait to explore.
“I became more and more enthusiastic about my potential at Mizzou after each stop,” said Walker, who is from Lee’s Summit, Missouri. “I could envision myself walking across campus and finding success. Plus, seeing the nature and flowers – and the amazing buildings – I thought MU had the entire package.”
Walker will have ample opportunities to explore her passions at Mizzou as she joins the incoming cohort of Stamps Scholars.
“It’s really unbelievable,” Walker said. “It felt like a door opened for me after being named a Stamps Scholar, full of new opportunities, new experiences and new connections. There’s so much to explore.”
One of those passions is journalism, which is the major that Walker plans to pursue at MU. In high school, Walker was a part of the Barstow Television Network (BTVN), a student-run television station that offers incredible hands-on learning experiences. She served as an executive producer for three years and spent plenty of time in front of and behind the camera.
“We produced shows nearly every day,” Walker said. “I always loved telling stories, and this work allowed me to do that in a really meaningful way.”
While touring the MU School of Journalism, Walker said that she is excited to continue her work related to broadcast journalism. She’s also ready to investigate other ways to not only tell stories but share those narratives.
“One thing that I’m really interested in is strategic communication,” Walker said. “It sounds fascinating, and I like the idea of working in many different areas, such as advertising, public relations and communication.
“Honestly, I want to explore everything at first. There are so many opportunities, and the School of Journalism has faculty who are experts in their fields and have professional experiences that are incredible.”
As a Stamps Scholar, Walker will be able to conduct research related to journalism, something she hasn’t had a chance to do before.
“As there were discussions around research, I kept thinking about what journalism research would actually look like,” Walker said. “I’m so eager to jump in. I’ve already had some great conversations about my plans, and I’m thrilled to work with a mentor for sure.”
Walker added that she’s keen to pursue the other opportunities that Mizzou offer, too. She was active in student council in high school, as well as having a passion for music and art. She’s considering these options, along with some of the many clubs and organizations across campus.
“There’s so much to look forward to,” Walker said. “Mizzou is an amazing place, and I’m ready to begin this journey.”
