Recruiting the Best and Brightest

The annual Honors Scholars & Fellows Recruitment Weekend kicked off on Nov. 5 with a series of events and programs geared toward accomplished prospective students.

Getting Our Geek On

The Honors College hosted its second annual Geek Week from Oct. 31-Nov. 4. Throughout the week MU students were encouraged to indulge in all things geeky and nerdy while enjoying free food and time with friends.

Alumna Joins Honors Staff

The Honors College welcomed alumna Jenelle Beavers as the new Associate Director on Nov. 1, 2016.

Celebrating Homecoming

In October, the Honors College took part in MU’s nearest and dearest tradition of Homecoming. Following the university-wide “A Tail of Tradition” theme, the Honors College was assigned the book “James and the Giant Peach” as its central theme.

The tension between “mathletes” and athletes is one that doesn’t have to exist, according to Show-Me-Scholar freshman Matthew Kane.

A look at life behind bars

On Oct. 2, a group of honors students toured the Missouri State Penitentiary as part of the Honors One Read Program. The trip was co-sponsored by MU Residential Life’s FIGS Program and Residence Hall Association, and was offered to students at no cost.

Meaningful Discussions

The MU community welcomed back alumna Stephanie McClure on Oct. 6-7 for a series of lectures and discussions about social justice, inclusion and misconceptions about race. McClure graduated from Mizzou in 1998 with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Black Studies.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Landing internships, building resumes and traveling abroad are all part of being a college student. Finding a place to start can be daunting for many, but junior Maddie Niemann had no problem figuring that out.

Each year, the Brazeal Scholarship offers one incoming freshman funding for up to eight semesters, as well as a yearlong research opportunity through Discovery Fellows and a study abroad experience.
