Honors College Students Find Confidence, Connection Through Study Abroad

Story by Riley Palshaw Each year, Mizzou Honors College students pack their suitcases and scatter across the world, chasing new experiences in places far from campus through study abroad. They go for different reasons – curiosity, adventure, academic opportunity – but they often return describing the same feeling. Studying abroad, they say, opened their eyes to new ways of living and learning, and became one of the most rewarding decisions they made at Mizzou. The Honors College supports these experiences in more than one way. Some students travel through the college’s own faculty-led…

Finding Her Voice: How the Honors College Helped Charlotte Cicero Lead, Learn and Look Ahead

Story by Riley Palshaw On the night of Oct. 4, Charlotte Cicero walked through downtown Columbia with a camera in hand, keeping pace with University of Missouri President Mun Choi and local leaders as they toured the area to discuss community safety. It wasn’t a typical KOMU assignment, or Saturday night for that matter, but for Cicero, a senior broadcast journalism student and KOMU 8 reporter, it was a reminder of why she fell in love with the profession: to inform, to connect and to give others a voice.  That same sense of purpose has guided every…

Honors Outstanding Senior: Isaac Yontz

Story by Logan Jackson As Isaac Yontz was making his college decision, he was pretty sure of one thing – he didn’t want to attend the University of Missouri. Yontz grew up in Columbia and was hoping to forge a path away from a university and city that were all too familiar. On the heels of the pandemic, though, Yontz realized that being closer to family may be his best option. While he was still a bit reluctant, Yontz made the decision to become a Tiger. He found his place at Mizzou little by little. As…

An Incredible Learning Environment: Milburn Earns Constitutional Democracy and History Degrees

Story by Logan Jackson The first piece of college recruitment material that Elise Milburn received came courtesy of the University of Missouri. While Milburn wasn’t shocked to see those types of materials as a high school student, she was a bit surprised to see something from a university in Missouri. “My family didn’t know anything about Mizzou,” said Milburn, who is from Texas. “We definitely joked about it at first, as I never imagined myself going somewhere I had never heard of before and that was fairly far away, but I did end up taking a closer…

A Spring and Summer of Adventure

Story by Sophia Anderson Senior Jasper Holland left the United States for the first time thanks to funding from the University of Missouri.  His first experience was last spring, for a research conference to Uzbekistan. This past summer, he went to France, where he worked on the reconstruction of a 17th century ship. Holland spent five days as part of the ship’s crew, sailing the English Channel. “I’m from here in Columbia, so I’m not near the ocean and never really have been,” Holland said. “It’s always been something that sounded like it would be really…

Changing Her Personal Narrative

As an advisor in the University of Missouri Office of Global and National Fellowships, Lauren Pike helps match Mizzou students with fellowship opportunities that align with their goals. As students navigate the application process, Pike and her fellow advisors offer support and guidance each step of the way. Pike helped numerous Mizzou students secure fellowships this past year – and a summer experience abroad will allow her to form an even deeper connection with the students she advises. Pike participated in the “Politics and Society in Central Asia” study abroad program this summer in Kyrgyzstan, led…
