Honors College Faculty Fellow

The Honors College seeks a Faculty Fellow to lead development of a Study Abroad component of the long-standing Honors Humanities Series.

A pile of various books.

About the Humanities Series

The Honors Humanities Series (or Sequence) was first taught in 1954 and led to the founding of the Honors College in 1958. It remains a core component of our signature Honors offerings. This four-semester Sequence provides students the opportunity to explore art, literature, music, philosophy and histories that have influenced the modern world. This interdisciplinary and collaborative set of courses encourages students in any major to deepen their thinking, ponder transformative texts and enduring “great questions,” practice forms of oral and written expression, and engage with faculty and students in a small discussion setting.

The Series, as it has evolved over the years, has consistently provided students local opportunities to attend relevant concerts and visit campus museums and archives that complement and enhance other course materials. We now seek to develop a study abroad experience (or experiences) that would extend the Humanities Series course for those students wanting to go deeper. At this point, we do not have a pre-conceived idea of what this study abroad experience would look like. It could be a Spring Break, a Maymester or summer program. It could focus on one city or multiple cities. It could be led by one faculty member or a pair. We are looking for someone ready to brainstorm!

  • Work with MU Study Abroad and Honors leadership on a vision for a new summer, Maymester or spring break study abroad experience designed for Honors students who have completed one or more semesters of the Humanities Series
  • Develop the infrastructure for the course, including participating in site visits as necessary
  • Assist with student recruitment for the experience
  • Consult with Honors advancement team to secure scholarship funds for program
  • Commit to leading the program at least twice

  • Applicants should be ranked faculty (TT or NTT) at the rank of associate professor or professor; under the right circumstances, advanced assistants may be considered
  • Applicants should have training in a Humanities discipline
  • Applicants should have a strong teaching record, preferably including Honors teaching
  • Experience with the Humanities Sequence preferred
